I’ve noticed this occasionally, and keep forgetting to ask: what causes the garbled filenames, and is there an easy way to fix it?
ie. something like:
(C84) [縺ソ縺ョ繧顔皮ゥカ謇 (螳滄ィ灘屁驛・] 謗貞ーゅぎ繝シ繝ォ (繧ケ繧ォ繝医Ο繝ェ).zip
>Len: I’ve been battling this on /off for months, partly because I find it hard to reproduce the issue to fix it. What operating system and extraction software are you using? Are you using the latest version of winrar?
Animal-freak meddlers and pompous yuri mischief makers on the same day?!? Righteous, Len..!
English Winrar x64 5.01 – was previously using 4.2, but doesn’t seem to have made a difference.
Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (English), Japanese language installed. Language for non-Unicode programs set to Japanese.
7-zip has the same issue, so I suspect it’s more an OS language thing that the extractor.

Thank you, I was able to reproduce it on a similar setup.
My file + upload server is using an outdated version of the rar commandline tool of linux, I’m on a shared hosting so I’ll have to ask them to update and see what they do.
Hopefully an update will fix it:
Changes in RAR 5.0 archive format – file names and archive comments use UTF-8 encoding.

It’s weird that only sometimes the filenames get trashed. Most of the time it’s fine.
FYI, assuming you have shell access to your machine, it appears you can just download the latest version of winrar for linux and run it from whatever directory – they even have a statically linked version (rar_static) so you don’t need to worry about libraries.
I tried it on a linux machine I have access to – appears to function.
Same problem with garbled filenames here. Last december batch 20 was fine, but the C83 Batch 70 had the same issue.
I’m also using Win7 Pro + SP1 and locale set on Japanese.
I’ve pieced together a work-around, C85 Batch 1 should have correct filenames if it works.
